By virtue of being some of the largest commercial enterprises in the country the PSUs possess the unique ability to rise above the short-term commercial interest and invest in creating national assets so as to maximize long-term economic gains. Driven by massive infrastructure investment plans of the government and increasing citizen expectations will further fuel IT spending by Indian public sector undertakings. So IT will enable the success story of PSUs in the days ahead.

Today PSUs are looking at IT to analyze customer information efficiently and develop targeted and customized offerings for customers. Besides, massive infrastructure investments and increasing citizen expectations are set to further fuel public sector IT spending. The PSUs are spending close to 2% of their revenues on IT for modernizing their processes and bringing efficiency. A global research and analysis firm Forrester estimates that India’s public sector’s IT purchases will grow at a CAGR of 14 percent between 2012 and 2017, reaching US $108.5 billion in 2017.

PSUs are playing a key role in the critical areas like power generation, power grids, air traffic control, banking, telecommunication, defence, etc., so it becomes important to ensure that the cyber systems or cloud at which they are working are capable of handling any security threat. They have to update their systems to be ahead in securing their systems with unknown threats. With IT as an enabler in most of the areas, cloud and big data are the areas that PSUs find complex to deal with. With the increased usage, it is imperative to ensure that the information and networks are capable of handling any security threat too. In the era of Internet, digital connectivity and use of e-commerce and e-business models by private sector are pressurizing the public sector to rethink on their hierarchical, bureaucratic organizational models. Governments need to empower rather than serve, to shift from hierarchy to teamwork and participation, to be mission oriented and customer focused, and to focus on prevention rather than cure. Recently, the public sector has begun to recognize the potential opportunities offered by ICT and e-business models to fit with citizens’ demands, to offer better services to citizens and to increase efficiency by streamlining internal processes. ICT causes a “paradigm shift” introducing “the age of network intelligence”, reinventing businesses, governments and individuals. It will bring flexibility, network organization, vertical/horizontal integration, innovative entrepreneurship,speed up in service delivery, and a customer driven strategy towards procurement functions.

To highlight best practices and next practices in terms of IT adoptions by PSUs while evaluating the existing ones for empowering PSUs growth by bringing efficiency, innovations, competitiveness and productivity, Governance Now is organizing India PSU IT Forum. It is also a pleasure to share that Governance Now will also launch a PSU IT Case Book at the forum, which will be a compilation of case studies (Projects) from PSUs that has brought big change in the organization and how they have overcame various challenges and streamlined processes through ICT.How the PSU at large including employees, customers and all the stakeholders are benefited with theimplementation of ICT projects.
